Elk County was organized in 1875. It is located in the southeast corner of Kansas. The County is 31 miles wide east and west by 21 miles north and south. The County was named for Elk River which runs in a diagonal direction from northwest to southeast. The original courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1906. The current courthouse was completed in 1908. The County consists 5 third class cities – Elk Falls, Grenola, Howard, Longton and Moline. The County seat is Howard. As of July 1, 2001, the population of the county was 3,189.
